Diminutive, for the fairies! 

Perfectly circular / round (resembling tiny, flat salt-spoons)  Underside of the leaves are smooth with less distinct veins. 

Characterized by short glandular hairs and laterally positioned bracts. Tiny leaves. Often found in low turf, rock outcrops, and crevices (frequently on limestone/calcareous or mixed substrates depending on subspecies). Found mainly to the Alps and Apennines.

Soldanellas are a favourite alpine flower, this is a much smaller variety than S.alpina so keep an eye on it in troughs and pots or crevices and don't let it cook in summer. That is ther best thing about a trough or pot as you can move it into cooler spots after spring Hardy and easy with good drainage, moisture and some humus. But watch any weeds, they swamp it as rowdy neighbours will. I've nearly lost it so many times, I'm yet to see it flower, but it is in brighter light now. I live in hope.

I have messed up the names of this due to incorrect labels in the past... but I think I'm getting them sorted. The next size up is S alpina, and the larger S montana or S. carpatica. Both S. alpina and S. pusilla  have more entire flowers, that is they look less like a tassel.
