Pyrenean Violet is a low-growing evergreen perennial forming a rosette of broadly ovate, hairy, dark green leaves. A hardy relative of the African Violet. Five-petalled purple flowers with prominent yellow anthers appear on leafless stems in spring. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. The species bears few, but persistent flowers in nature over a long spring season. It has been cultivated in Europe and North America for decades, even centuries in botanical gardens. It is fine in the open here in Canterbury, but needs constant moisture and excellent drainage in a cooler partly shaded/shaded spot where they flower reliably. Very slow growing and more compressed and hard done by looking here.I have been lucky enough to see it covering cliffs in nooks and crannies facing north in the Spanish Pyrenees. While they couldn't be easily reached for photos, the petals littered the road side in the cliffs.
