Native Scabweed. A hard little encrusting plant often found in poor soils that were once active river beds. It is fantastic. You can almost use it like a small drum. Tricky to grow in humid or wet conditions it needs excellent drainage and to grow on gravels. Drought tolerant. This picture from the Te Papa collection shows the naturally dead bits of cushion which adds to the visual artistry. The perfect groundcover for those hot dry areas near hardscapes. Very low growing, off the scale, but can spread to 30cm easily over time. the tiny yellow flowers appear in the spring and extend through to the end of the summer. Not much on their own, but they are pretty en masse. It is best to plant these in 4cm at least of gravels or very course sand to keep the leaves dry.
