A wonderful hardy little gem.
There are many hybrids of P. 'Ethel Barker' is one of the old ones. A hardy spring flowering small primula. (late September). Only about 7 cm high for me. A poppet and a heavy bloomer. It bulks up well and is a good doer. What more could one ask?
hnaks to Dennis Chang who took this picture of my plant at the NZAGS meeting.
For those mad on minutiae of things plants: From the Quarterly of the American Primrose Society, 1956, as shown below.
P. x auricula of gardens: under this name we refer to the familiar and beloved auriculas of the garden and the florist's show bench, perhaps best referred to under P. × hortensis, Wettstein. These developments are so vast and the named varieties so numerous as to be quite incapable of treatment here. They require a volume to themselves. The vast race is understood to be derived from the cross between P. auricula and P. rubra and as such might be thought of as P. x pubescens but, so readily do the varieties interbreed both among themselves and with the parent species, and so responsive are they to the pollen of other species in the garden that it seems practically certain that the moden auriculas reflect the influence of species other than and in addition to the parents of the original cross.
More auricula primulas next spring.
