Like the more common mossy Phlox, these plants were originally wildflowers in the west of North America. The breeder of 'Wagon Wheel' is not known, but it was imported from the UK by the Gillanders, who noted that its flowers resemble the wheels of a wagon. The plant was a favorite of Ken Gillander. The semi-evergreen, mat-forming perennial with short stems clothed in small, oval leaves has open clusters of narrow-lobed, pale-eyed, pink flowers with a darker pink stripe down the centre of each petal. They flower later than the mossy phlox and are even after the woodland phlox so extend the phlox season from late spring. These are rock garden plants but prefer cooler conditions in summer, so light shade would be best with, of course the easy-to-provide-simultaneously, good daylight! They need good drainage. 15cmH
