Jeffersonia diphylla

Foliage to love.

In the barberry family with a single species in Eastern North America (and one other in Japan) named after  Thomas Jefferson, who grew this plant at Monticello. From moist deciduous forests. White flowers are supposed to emerge, but the parent has very pale mauve flowers… It does have the divided twinleaf of this species which is the reason for planting this in a woodland.  Deciduous. 40cm. Seed needs to be fresh and its tricky to catch the cute pixie cup before it splits open to disperse the seed.
