A perfect little treasure.
Dwarf lake iris. A plant similar to I. cristata, but a bit later and another creeping iris with finer rhizomes. The State Wildflower of Michigan is an attractive miniature iris with showy, petite, palest blue flowers on this variety, which open from mid October and are borne singly on short stems which are no more than 7cm tall, so they form quite a low dense mat of flowers later than I. cristata. They also flower sporadically later in the season. Why not plant both and have the fun for longer? Similar conditions required. Happy in your woodland or in a gravvely place that gets sun for half the day. They are becoming increasingly uncommon in the wild. In the wild Iris lacustris is usually found growing in moist, sandy, or rocky soils, in sun-dappled, forested openings, often near the lake shore. Here it grows with ease anywhere. A delightful rapidly spreading patch gives so much joy.
