Iris japonica

Commonly known as fringed iris, shaga and butterfly flower, is a native to forest margins and wet grasslands of China and Japan. A woodland iris that is rhizomatous 60 cm tall. Thin, semi-glossy, sword-shaped basal leaves grow in fans with downward arching tips. As rhizomes spread outward, which they certainly do, even in awful conditions, new fans appear. Large orchid-like flowers bloom in spring. Falls are pale blue to white, mine are white, with prominent yellow crests and serrated edges.
