A light, fine-flowered clematis with small leaves and sparkling voilet blooms, weaving gently through fences and hedges. Everywhere...
From southern Europe and western Asia, from Italy east to Iran. It grows in open woodlands, hedgerows, and on old walls, and is recorded in England in the 16th century. This is the wild species, it has been bred to many larger flowered forms.
The second image compares the leaves and flowers of C. viorna (left) with C. viticella (my species). The leaves are smaller and the flower fine and almost sparkly.
