False dittany, is a small, bushy shrub that thrives in hot, sunny and dry conditions. It's aided by a covering of felty, silver hairs. In late summer it produces flowering spears that bear whorls of small pink flowers. Best in sun and drier areas of the garden. Great in gravels etc. Cut back hard in spring. 60-70cm AGM. Much used in Mediterranean planting. We seem only to have this species, but it is the brightest spring-green colour and the daintiest. Olivier Filippi suggests growing it with species of phlomis, sprawling cistuses, lavender and rosemary if you are in a dry spot and want undulating mounds of low maintenance plants. You could add Clematis cirrohosa, which I hope yo have soon, to sprawl in amongts it disappearing in summer. Photo of leaves and flowers by Cillas, Wikimedia Commons |
