Adonis amurensis
Adonis amurensis
From the fabled river Amur region, a no man's sort of land between Russia and China. This plant is super adorable in that the brightest golden yellow flowers emerge in early spring, even from snow and ice. Treat it like a Paeony to spread it about, but wait until the clump is well developed. Do not disturb, full sun, good drainage. This plant will send up lovely finely divided foliage just after the flowers and will be gone again in early summer. Best in cooler areas. I have it planted with cotula, whose button below flowers are out at the end of winter and they make a lovely combo. Once the Adonis have retreated there is ground cover and some shelter from the surrounding Carex and shield ferns. Otherwise light woodland is a great spot as the sun is needed in late winter early spring, but not in summer. This position has not as successful for me though. Does well in Christchurch. Only two, 12cm -large pots These represent many years division to have some spare. I am happy to keep them in order to have more bulking up.
