One of our rarest plants, Scutellaria novae-zelandiae, decorates the ground in the norther and northwest South Island black beech and Totora  forests with its delicate white flowers. As Philip Smith writes "where it occurs is intriguing, as there are no other members of this large genus within New Zealand. It is a beautiful little detail for woodland gardens." Found on free draining soils where there is little competition.
