Helianthemum nummularium subsp. grandiflorum

From the Dolomites. The original rock rose that gave rise to our forms available now. This spreading plant with a woody stem is 25cm high with densely hair leaves and buds. Bright yellow flowers from spring with masses of golden stamens up to 3 cm across.They close up at night - hence the genus name Helianthemum, which means 'sun flower'.  Likes it hot and dry and lime preferred. The simplicity of the wild species is hard to beat in a sophisticated rock garden.
