Rocks, Gravel & Sand

Various inorganic mulches can help plants survive. Rock, crevice and scree gardens as well as the newer idea of sand gardens al utilise this concept. The genuine alpine plants and the river bed plants that share their characteristic forms, as well as the more desert species, all like to keep their leaves above the wet and damp ground, especially in winter. All these plants require good drainage. Building above the existing land contours with rocks means a perfectly draining zone is possible. It has the added benefit of giving a gardener more surface area to play with and the ability to create the important microclimates, for example the shady as opposed to the sunny side of a rock.

A layer of sand 200-300mm deep can provide a working water saving "mulch" as discovered by Peter Korn. This plant is super adorable in that the brightest golden yellow flowers emerge in early spring, even from snow and ice. Treat it like a Paeony to spread it about, but wait until the clump is well developed. Do not disturb, full sun, good drainage. This plant will send up lovely finely divided foliage just after the flowers and will be gone again in early summer. Best in cooler areas. I have it planted with cotula, whose button below flowers are out at the end of winter and they make a lovely combo. Once the Adonis have retreated there is ground cover and some shelter from the surrounding Carex and shield ferns.
